Don’t Miss a Childhood

This website is one I wish I’d found years ago. But then, when I was a young mom we didn’t have websites like this, or cell phones, or lots of things. But I missed out on a lot and so did my children because I wasn’t a “hands-free mama.” I hope you like this site as much as I do.

Our flag

There were many flags flying yesterday. Do children today understand the meaning of this? I definitely will write about this soon – the meaning of our flag.

Dragonflies and Damselflies

Children seem to love Dragonflies and Damselflies. For the young, these beautiful creatures may have to be pointed out to them. It is a wonderful learning experience for your child, or classroom or to write about.

Here is a good website on how to tell the difference between the two:

Like most dragonflies, this one was close to water. When it’s warm and you are near a lake or pond or small stream, be on the look out for them.

Bluffton News Group

I see the editor has updated the theme list for Fun For Kidz, Boys’ Quest and Hopscotch For Girls. If you write an article, you stand a better chance if you include good black and white pictures.

How are YA books doing?

This is an interesting article from Harold Underdown.

http://www.underdown.org/YA-book-boom.htm

I have only been published in magazines for this age group although I would like to write books. When I check the markets though it seems that so many publishers are closed to open submissions. I shouldn’t give up I know, but it is admittedly easier to stick with the markets I know, mainly Pre-K to MG.

Write every day!

This is my new motto. It is too easy to let “life” get in the way.

Have a nice day and a wonderful weekend.

Visiting the Zoo

Children, and adults, love to visit the zoo. I have mixed feelings because I want the animals to be free. But the zoos are helping endangered animals survive, and children can learn so much at the zoo. Most zoos have special programs where children and adults can go “behind the scenes” with a zoo keeper and learn even more.

As a writer, I have often found inspiration for my articles at a zoo. Be careful though – get permission when needed, and especially for photographs. Almost all zoos will let you take pictures but many will not let you sell those pictures without permission.

If you live in Arizona, there are many fine zoos. The Phoenix Zoo has been voted one of the top five zoos for kids.   http://www.phoenixzoo.org/

Another good blog for writers and children

I am very impressed with the blogs and websites of fellow writers and illustrators. I’ll move onto another topic from now on, but I wanted to share some of the very excellent blogs with you.
